MINNEAPOLIS , MN, UNITED STATES, September 10, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Carba today announced that its flagship project at the Burnsville Sanitary Landfill has become the first carbon removal project validated under Isometric's methodology for biochar storage in low-oxygen environments. The milestone demonstrates that Carba's project meets the rigorous scientific requirements for quantifying and monitoring carbon removal from landfill-based biocarbon storage, and how existing waste management infrastructure can be leveraged to deliver durable carbon removal and mitigate long-term pollution at scale.With the confirmation of this project validation from Isometric, Carba also announced U.S. Bank as a purchaser of carbon removal credits from the project, reflecting growing demand for high-quality carbon removal solutions that generate measurable environmental and community benefits. This is U.S. Bank’s first purchase of durable carbon removal credits.
Carba removes carbon from the atmosphere by converting waste biomass into stable biocarbon before securely storing it in engineered landfill environments. By integrating carbon removal into existing landfill and industrial infrastructure, Carba is building a scalable waste-to-value platform that transforms low-value biomass into long-term carbon storage while reducing deployment costs and accelerating project development.
In addition to durable carbon removal, Carba's approach may provide multiple environmental and community benefits supported by independent academic publications including both lab and field research on biochar in landfills, including reductions in PFAS and other contaminants such as lead and mercury in landfill leachate, reduced landfill odors, and enhanced methane oxidation. Carba is undertaking additional laboratory and field testing to evaluate these outcomes under commercial operating conditions while creating productive uses for waste biomass that might otherwise be landfilled, burned, or left to decompose and supporting forest fuel reduction efforts.

The validated project is located at the Burnsville Sanitary Landfill in Burnsville, Minnesota, where Carba is demonstrating how existing infrastructure can be repurposed to support both environmental remediation and long-term carbon storage.
