PeaceJam’s Executive Director Lauren Coffaro holds the official proclamation declaring September 21, 2026 as ‘Day of Peace,’ in front of the City of Denver offices at the Colorado State Capitol.
Proclamation marks the International Day of Peace and three decades of PeaceJam's service to Colorado youth.
The proclamation also marks the 30th anniversary of PeaceJam, a Denver-based nonprofit whose Nobel Peace Laureate-inspired programs have empowered thousands of young people across Colorado over three decades. In honoring that work, the City and County of Denver joins PeaceJam in "encouraging young leaders to be committed to positive change within themselves, their communities, and the world."
Established by the United Nations, the International Day of Peace is dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and peoples. The proclamation calls peace "humanity's guiding inspiration" and notes that global and local challenges ask all of us to act.
"Building peace takes all of us," said Lauren Coffaro, Executive Director of PeaceJam. "At its heart, PeaceJam is about young people translating inspiration into action for peace, and for 30 years, Colorado youth have done exactly that in their schools and communities. Denver has always been our home, and this community helped take the movement global. Many Denverites still remember our 10th anniversary gathering at the University of Denver, when thousands of young people joined 10 Nobel Peace Laureates, including the Dalai Lama."
PeaceJam's mission is to educate and empower youth to take action for peace, inspired by Nobel Peace Laureates. Since its first conference in 1996, hosted by Nobel Peace Laureate Betty Williams at Regis University in Denver, PeaceJam has engaged more than 1.3 million young people across 45 countries.
On this Day of Peace, Denver residents and communities across Colorado are invited to reflect on one action they can take to build greater peace within themselves, their neighborhoods, and the world.
