Free September 18–20 event brings Indigenous knowledge, textile innovation, contemporary art, sustainable design and fashion to Brooklyn and Governors Island

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, September 7, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Presented by Choose Your Change, the FARM TO FABRIC Hemp Textile and Fashion Symposium is a free multi-day exploration of the history and future of hemp, tracing the material’s journey from agriculture and traditional fiber practices to contemporary textiles, design, manufacturing, art, and fashion. The first two days take place at the Brooklyn Peace Center where visitors will experience the many stages of hemp’s transformation while also exploring the history, knowledge, and cultural traditions that have shaped its use over time.

Programming will look at farming and regenerative agriculture, fiber processing, textile development, design, manufacturing, and the growing possibilities for hemp within a more sustainable textile economy. Live demonstrations at the Brooklyn Peace Center will feature the Tuscarora Nation, KINGDOM / weavearth, and the NC State Wilson College of Textiles, each offering a different perspective on hemp’s journey from fiber to textile and design. Together, these demonstrations connect traditional knowledge, material innovation, textile development, and contemporary applications in real time. The Symposium also serves as a collaborative platform connecting New York’s creative community with leaders from across the hemp textile supply chain, creating opportunities for knowledge sharing, storytelling, and cross-sector partnerships that support a more sustainable and resilient future for textiles.

Contemporary art is woven into the Brooklyn portion of the Symposium through an exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Marie Pervenche featuring over 20 original ink works created on raw hemp textile. This exhibition, RAW — INK ON HEMP, extends the farm-to-fabric story into contemporary art, connecting hemp’s long history to new forms of artistic experimentation and cultural expression. Curated by Connie Byun of 3RD ETHOS GALLERY, the exhibition brings together RAW — Ink on Hemp, Series No. 1 and INDIFFERENCE — Ink on Hemp, Series No. 2, alongside selected works from WOMAN — Ink on Linen.

Sunday, September 20th, the weekend culminates on Governors Island with the Julian Magazine Hemp Issue Release and Fashion Presentation, carrying the farm-to-fabric story forward through fashion, storytelling, culture, and community. Brought by National Industrial Hemp Council in collaboration with Choose Your Change, the presentation will feature garments and collections created using hemp and hemp-blend textiles, demonstrating the versatility, innovation, and growing possibilities of natural fibers within contemporary design. Guests will experience finished garments while connecting them back to the farms, fibers, mills, makers, designers, and collaborations behind them — continuing the Symposium’s exploration of where hemp has been and where it can go next. The event also marks the official release of a special hemp-focused issue of Julian Magazine, documenting the people, organizations, artists, designers, and partnerships contributing to the evolving farm-to-fabric movement.
