Organization seeks verification of whether prescribed medication is consistently administered and documented following concerns raised by detainees

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, August 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Foreign Prisoners Network Mauritius has requested an independent review of medical and medication-administration procedures within Mauritius prisons following concerns communicated to the organization by detainees.

According to accounts received by Foreign Prisoners Network Mauritius, prisoners requesting medical assistance are generally referred for medical assessment. When medication is considered necessary, a prescription may be issued and the medical consultation is recorded in the prisoner’s file.
The concerns reported to the organization relate primarily to the period following that consultation.
Some detainees have alleged that prescribed medication was not received, was received later than expected, or was not administered consistently with the prescription. Foreign Prisoners Network Mauritius has not independently verified each individual allegation and is requesting an independent review to establish the relevant facts.

“The purpose of the requested review is straightforward: to determine whether medication prescribed by medical professionals is consistently administered to detainees and whether the administration records accurately reflect the treatment received,” said a spokesperson for Foreign Prisoners Network Mauritius.

The organization proposes that an independent review compare medical prescriptions with medication administration records, prison pharmacy and stock records, hospital referrals and records relating to serious medical incidents.

The request follows increased attention to healthcare and deaths in custody within the Mauritian prison system, including reported incidents involving Melrose Prison and Beau-Bassin Prison. Foreign Prisoners Network Mauritius states that no conclusion should be drawn about the cause of any individual death without appropriate medical and official investigation.

The organization also states that the proposed review is not directed at individual prison officers, doctors or healthcare personnel. The objective is to assess whether existing procedures provide a complete and verifiable record from medical consultation through to the administration of prescribed treatment.
Prisoners are dependent on prison authorities for access to medication, medical professionals and hospital treatment while in custody. Foreign Prisoners Network Mauritius considers independent verification of those procedures relevant to both institutional accountability and the protection of basic healthcare standards.

“Independent verification can provide clarity for prisoners, healthcare professionals, prison staff and the authorities. Where procedures are functioning correctly, the review can document that. Where deficiencies are identified, the findings can support appropriate corrective measures,” the spokesperson said.

Foreign Prisoners Network Mauritius is requesting that relevant authorities consider an independent examination of a representative sample of medical records and corresponding medication-administration data, with appropriate safeguards for medical confidentiality and prisoner privacy.
The organization also supports publication of anonymized findings where permitted, allowing the public and relevant stakeholders to better understand how medical treatment is administered within custodial facilities.
