Clinical trials provide the structured pathway through which new medicines, diagnostic approaches, medical devices and therapeutic procedures are evaluated in patients. They are essential to determining whether an innovation is safe, effective and capable of producing meaningful clinical benefit before it becomes part of wider medical practice.
KFSH established its centralized Clinical Trials service in 2020 to coordinate studies conducted by hospital clinicians and researchers. The service combines feasibility assessment, activation, trial operations and completion with the workforce needed to manage patient recruitment, investigational medicines, data quality, safety reporting, ethics and regulatory requirements. It also helps investigators work effectively with patients, sponsors and international research partners.
During the first half of 2025 the hospital recorded 104 active trials and 80 new studies underway. These extended across cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune and musculoskeletal conditions, dermatology, gastroenterology, liver disease, and endocrine and metabolic disorders. This breadth allows patients with complex conditions to access emerging therapeutic options while generating evidence relevant to the Kingdom's healthcare needs.
One significant example involved the treatment of the first patient in a Phase I clinical trial using genetically engineered CAR-T cells manufactured locally for relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The trial connected local scientific capability, advanced biomanufacturing and highly specialized clinical care within a single translational pathway.
KFSH's model also strengthens the Kingdom's ability to participate in complex international studies. Centralized trial management, research governance and specialist clinical infrastructure create a foundation for multinational collaboration while maintaining standards for ethics, patient safety, data quality and regulatory compliance.
Scientific ambition alone does not change patient care. Breakthroughs in AI, biotechnology, genomics and advanced therapeutics require strong clinical-trials systems capable of testing innovation responsibly and generating the evidence needed for adoption.
