Las Vegas professional guardianship agency shares practical questions families can use when evaluating support options for a vulnerable adult.

The guidance draws on the person-centered principles described in the National Guardianship Association's Standards of Practice and is intended to help families ask informed questions as they navigate complex care, medical, residential and financial decisions.

The National Guardianship Association's 2022 Standards of Practice state that guardians should identify and advocate for a person's goals, needs and preferences. The standards also direct guardians to select the least restrictive alternative that meets the person's needs while respecting freedom, rights and control of the person's setting. Nevada Guardian Services encourages families to consider five practical questions when evaluating guardianship support. Families may ask what the individual wants and what support would help the individual express those wishes; whether options are available that would meet the person's needs with fewer restrictions; how medical, residential and financial decisions will be made and documented; how appropriate family members, trusted friends and qualified professionals will participate in planning; and what authority a guardian has and how the guardian is accountable to the court.

“Guardianship is not a one-size-fits-all solution,” Hoy said. “A thoughtful process begins with listening, understanding the available options and seeking guidance that is individualized, responsible and respectful.”
