"An app that shames you for missing a day of prayer has misunderstood both apps and prayer," said Benny Yu, founder of Bible with Life. "Streaks work by making you afraid to stop. That is a strange emotion to attach to Scripture. We would rather someone come back on day nine because the passage was good than because the app threatened their number."
The design is deliberately small, Yu said, because the failure mode of devotional media is not that people read too little but that they quit entirely when the system makes them feel behind. A practice that takes five minutes and forgives absence outlasts one that demands perfection.
"Most people do not stop praying because they stopped believing," Yu added. "They stop because they ran out of words, or because the routine collapsed and restarting felt like an admission. We remove both. Here is a passage. Here is one thing to pray. Tomorrow there will be another. Nothing is counting."
