On Patriot Day, military mothers remember those lost on 9/11 and honor the service members, veterans, first responders, and families who answered the call.

September 11 changed America forever.

What began as an ordinary Tuesday morning became a day of unimaginable loss at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and aboard Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

In the hours, days, and years that followed, Americans responded with courage, compassion, unity, and service.

First responders rushed toward danger. Volunteers stepped forward to help strangers. Communities gathered in prayer and remembrance. Members of the United States Armed Forces answered the call to defend our nation, beginning a new chapter of military service that would shape an entire generation of service members, veterans, and their families.

For Blue Star Mothers of America, the legacy of September 11 is deeply connected to the organization's mission.

Across the country, military mothers watched sons and daughters raise their right hands, deploy overseas, return home as veterans, and in some cases make the ultimate sacrifice. The post 9/11 generation of military families experienced years of deployments, separations, homecomings, uncertainty, and sacrifice.

Twenty five years later, Blue Star Mothers continue standing beside those families while serving active duty military members, veterans, and Gold Star Families through volunteer service, care packages, veteran outreach, remembrance ceremonies, and community programs. Blue Star Mothers of America's mission includes supporting military service members, veterans, military families, and families of Fallen Heroes.

From Remembrance to Service

Patriot Day is an opportunity to remember, but it is also an opportunity to serve.

September 11 is recognized nationally as a Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging Americans to honor those killed and injured on September 11, first responders, members of the Armed Forces, and others who have served the nation by strengthening their own communities through volunteerism. In 2026, the observance carries particular significance as the nation commemorates the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

Blue Star Mothers of America encourages individuals and communities to participate in local September 11 memorial ceremonies and remembrance events and to find meaningful opportunities to serve.

That service may take many forms: visiting veterans, supporting military families, volunteering within the community, donating needed items, writing messages of encouragement to deployed service members, participating in memorial events, or simply helping a neighbor.

Every act of service carries forward something America witnessed so powerfully after September 11: ordinary people choosing to care for one another.

Honoring the Post 9/11 Generation

Patriot Day also provides an opportunity to recognize the service members and military families whose lives were forever shaped by what happened on September 11.

Some of today's veterans were inspired to enlist because of the attacks. Others were already serving and found themselves entering a dramatically different era of military service.

Behind them were parents, spouses, children, grandparents, siblings, and loved ones who experienced deployments and long separations while carrying their own worries at home.

For military mothers, supporting a son or daughter in uniform can mean waiting for a phone call, preparing care packages, celebrating homecomings, helping during transitions to civilian life, standing beside veterans, and supporting families during times of loss.

That commitment continues long after a deployment ends.

Blue Star Mothers of America was founded in 1942 and today brings together more than 6,000 members in nearly 200 chapters across the country. Members support one another throughout the military family journey while volunteering in Veterans Affairs facilities and state veterans homes, sending care packages and encouragement to deployed service members, supporting Gold Star Families, participating in patriotic ceremonies, and serving their communities.

Twenty Five Years Later, We Remember

On this 25th anniversary, Blue Star Mothers of America asks Americans to pause.

Remember those who left home that morning and never returned. Remember the first responders who ran toward danger. Remember the families whose lives changed forever. Remember those who answered the call to military service in the years that followed. Remember the veterans who carry the experiences of those years with them today.
